People with autism often struggle to cope with daily situations which most of us take for granted and this can lead to confusion, frustration and a significant amount of distress for the sufferer. In many cases this could be avoided if only more people had a better understanding and awareness of autism and adapted environments accordingly, making them more accessible to people with this condition.</p>  

<h2>What is autism?</h2>

<p>Autism is known as a &#8220;spectrum&#8221; condition, because people who have it share certain difficulties that are characterised by a broad set of symptoms. The way in which it affects the person&#8217;s life will differ from individual to individual.  It&#8217;s a lifelong developmental disability which is present from early childhood &#8211; with it being more common in males than females. The most well-known form of autism is known as Asperger’s Syndrome.</p>

<h2>What are the symptoms?</h2>

<p>Autism causes problems with communication, thinking and imagination, social interaction and sensory sensitivity. How this affects an individual can vary greatly; one person with autism may be vocal and bright, another person may be introverted and have a low-IQ.</p>
<p>People with autism may have trouble grasping abstract and ambiguous concepts. They may have a narrow range of interests and many think in a rigid way, requiring strict routine and familiarity.</p>

<p>Autistic people have difficulty processing and understanding information. Shops could make it easier for autistic people to understand signs by clearly labelling things such as seating areas, toilets or payment areas.  As well as using wording, it may be helpful to use pictures and symbols with the signs as this makes it easier for an autistic person to understand.</p>
<p>It can be hard for autistic people to accept change and understand what happens next, so they have a pattern of thinking that is geared towards routine and structure. If a business such as a supermarket would like to make their establishment more autism friendly, they should avoid changing the stock layout as often, as this can cause confusion and upset to an autistic person. This could also apply to many other businesses that wish to incorporate an autism friendly environment for their customers.</p>
<p>Autistic people are very sensitive to sound and light and loud noises and bright lighting can cause them anguish. Creating an environment where they have the option to adjust lighting or sound can be very helpful to an autistic person. Initiatives such as autistic friendly theatre and <a href="http://www.cineworld.co.uk/news/397/detail">cinema screenings</a>, where light and sound levels are kept low, can help to give autistic people an accessible social environment. Even something as simple as replacing a noisy hand drier in public toilets and opting for paper towels instead, can make life less stressful for an autistic person.</p>
<p>Autistic people also often struggle with the perception of time and having to wait for long periods can be challenging. Thus, service providers should offer them the chance to avoid standing in queues for significant amounts of time, which might cause them unnecessary distress. Some theme parks are part of an initiative which allows families with autistic members to &#8220;jump&#8221; the queues meaning that they can avoid long waiting times and also the chaos of crowds.</p>
<p>Autism awareness is all about knowing what you can do to aid autistic people in leading a happy and fulfilled life with as much ease as possible. <h2>Disappearance of Front Line Services</h2>

<p>Front line services are disappearing in many parts of the country as Primary Care Trusts, walk-in centres and support groups are amongst those suffering the biggest cutbacks.</p>

<p>The cutbacks have left many patients either unable to get the appropriate treatment or facing extended waiting lists for all but the most serious of illnesses. Those worst affected are people awaiting IVF, speech therapy or joint replacements.</p>

				<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>Do you find yourself unable to feel rested no matter how much you sleep? Do you wake in the middle of the night gasping for air or choking? You may be suffering from sleep apnoea.</p>
<p>Sleep apnoea is a condition where sleep is interrupted from being unable to breathe properly. Quite often intense snoring will lead to a blockage in the airways. When airflow stops, the brain becomes deprived of oxygen which will then cause the person to wake up.</p>
<p>The victim will jolt himself or herself awake and resume breathing normally. Breathing can become interrupted as many as several hundred times a night and can last from 10 to 30 seconds each time!</p>
<p>The basic cause of sleep apnoea is airway obstruction. The condition doesn&#8217;t have an exact cause, only that at night, breathing difficulty causes the sufferer to wake up periodically.</p>
<p>It is estimated that as many as 18 million Americans suffer from sleep apnoea even though only a small percentage of sufferers have been diagnosed. Read on for the causes of sleep apnoea and learn how you may be able to cure your own sleep problems once and for all.</p>

<h2>Symptoms of Sleep Apnoea</h2>

<p>The common and uncommon symptoms of this condition are listed below.</p>

<h3>Common Signs:</h3>

<ul>
<li>Loud, persistent snoring every night – your partner should be able to tell you if this is a problem (unless you record yourself doing it every night).</li>
<li>Snorting, gasping, or choking during sleep – sometimes this will jolt you awake. If this happens regularly, you are in extreme danger.</li>
<li>Breathing stops for long periods of time – not to the point of death, but your body will alert you when this happens.</li>
<li>Tiredness during the day, no matter how much sleep was obtained the night before – it so happens that you can get the recommended 8 hours of sleep consistently, but it doesn&#8217;t mean it was a good 8 hours.</li> 
</ul>

<h3>Less Common Signs:</h3>

<ul>
<li>Feeling out of breath in the morning – sometimes this is your body catching up on the bad breathing patterns experienced throughout the night.</li>
<li>Insomnia (being unable to stay asleep throughout the night) – self-explanatory, but equally important to be aware of it.</li>
<li>Using the restroom often at night – this could happen with sleep apnoea even if you don&#8217;t drink much before you go to bed.</li>
<li>Depression, anxiety, moodiness – sleep apnoea leads to these symptoms over time.  Be aware of them.</li>
<li>Headaches in the morning &#8211; good sleep shouldn&#8217;t lead to headaches.  If you have headaches, you need to be aware that it could be a sign of sleep apnoea.</li>
<li>Sore throat or dry mouth when waking up – when your mouth lies wide open in the middle of the night it causes extraneous breathing, which leads to a sore throat or dry mouth.</li>
<li>Restless sleep – again, your partner should be able to tell you.</li>
</ul>

<h2>Causes</h2>

<p>The most common risk factors for having sleep apnoea are:</p>

<ul>
<li>Being overweight</li>
<li>Male</li>
<li>Regular smoker</li>
<li>65 years old or older</li>
<li>Hispanic, Pacific Islander, or Black</li>
<li>Family members with this problem</li>
</ul>

<p>Please note, however, that not everyone that fits into these categories will get sleep apnoea.  These are the targeted areas based on research.</p> 

<h2>Easing Your Symptoms</h2>

<p>If any of the above causes and risk factors apply to you, it should be addressed as soon as possible. This is a great app for casual runners but it is absolutely essential for those runners training for marathons.</p>

<p>The GymGoal app is one that I use personally because it is the perfect way to store information about your workouts. Any regular gym goers out there knows that keeping track of their regime helps you to maximise muscle growth and achieve your aims. That is exactly what this app does, you can record what exercises you did and what weights you used. So there will be no guessing next time you get to the gym and it slightly negates the risk of plateauing.</p>

<p>This app is jsut as useful to the new gym goer as it is to the seasoned veteran. It provides a ncie range of exercises and tips to make sure you are exercising effectively and safely.</p>

<h2>Whole Food Market Recipes</h2>

<p><b>Cost: free</b></p>

<p>All the exercise in the world isn&#8217;t going to be as effective if you don&#8217;t eat right is it? That is why Whole Food Market Recipes app makes the list. It is a great resource for those try to eat a healthy and balanced diet but don&#8217;t know how.</p>

<p>The app has a list as long as my arm of tasty recipes that don&#8217;t leave you feeling like you need to work out doubly hard tomorrow. I know the culinary tastes will vary quite a lot in different people but the WFMR app caters to everyone, literally.</p>

<h2>Nike+ Running</h2>

<p><b>Cost: free</b></p>

<p>The Nike+ Running app is probably a slightly more polished version of RunKeeper. It too enables you to track your run via GPS, and it also gives you various timing options such as split timing every mile.</p>

<p>The app also has a few other novelty options such as syncing it to your social media accounts, selecting a list of ‘power songs&#8217; from your own music. But my favourite has to be the encouragement given by celebrities and sporting stars as you reach certain milestones or break personal records.</p>

<p>As part of this process it’s inevitable that some thought is given to mortality, to getting older and what this means in terms of life opportunities, to physical capabilities and appearance.</p>

<p>Very quickly, reflecting on the path that has led to the here and now leads to looking in the mirror for evidence of bridges crossed along the way. It is often at this point that wishes or personal promises are made to live healthier, to exercise more often, to start taking a vitamin supplement and make more effort to take greater care of skin before it begins to look truly lived in.</p>

Sadly, as not all of us have a delightful fireplace to cuddle up in front of, it’s no surprise that our bodies and brains can take a bit of a hit in wintertime. What with grey skies, icy temperatures, and not to mention all those Christmas songs on repeat, we can start feeling a little frightful too. Make sure you beat the cold; here are 7 tips to keep you feeling sunny, whatever the weather.</p>

<h2>1. Hot Drinks</h2>

<p>It can often feel like we never want to be without a hot drink in hand in winter – and they’re a great way to keep the cold at bay. Be careful when it comes to tea and coffee, though; the reason they warm us up is because caffeine increases blood flow to the skin and our bodies lose heat as a result, even though we might feel warm. The same goes for alcohol – so go easy on the mulled wine when you’re outdroos! It’s better to stick to hot fruit or herbal drinks, or decaffeinated beverages, if you’re trying to stay toasty.</p>

<h2>2. Chocolate</h2>

<p>The debate about the health benefits of chocolate has raged for years. One thing is for certain; eating tons of the stuff certainly isn’t healthy. However, a little chocolate is a delicious and comforting treat to beat the chill, and evidence exists that eating chocolate with low-sugar, high-cocoa content can do you all sorts of good. Dark chocolate is shown to increase blood flow to the heart and the head – always a benefit in cold weather – and also contains a number of minerals and vitamins, such as potassium, copper, magnesium and iron. <p>Before you rush off down to the high street to pick up the latest tooth whitening products it’s important to be aware of the recent legislation changes.</p> 

<h2>What the changes mean to you</h2>

<p>On October 31st 2012 the EU implemented a new set of rules regarding dentistry that brings a number of new regulations into force concerning who is able to use certain strengths of tooth whitening products.</p>

<p>Although often seen as a quick and easy way to get that Hollywood smile, tooth whitening can have disastrous consequences. In the past many products on the market have promised great benefits but can end up stripping the enamel off your teeth causing greater sensitivity and a higher proneness to future staining and discoloration.</p>  

<p>The rule changes mean that any use of tooth whitening products over 0.1% must be carried out by a dental professional after an appropriate clinical examination. Further use of the product may be available at home but the initial whitening process must be undertaken by a dental practitioner.</p>

<h2>Off the shelf products</h2> 

<p>Despite these regulations it is still possible to get a whiter smile within the comforts of your own home. There are various toothpastes on the market that will reduce staining and discoloration without falling under these regulations and they can be commonly sourced from the local supermarket.</p> 

<p>Chewing gum can often be the first line of defense against after dinner coffee and red wine stains. This have been proven to reduce cavities and plaque after meals – especially helpful when you don’t have the chance to have a quick brush after lunch.</p>

<h2>Dental procedures</h2>

<p>There are two types of tooth whitening that can be undertaken by your dentist. First and perhaps the most convenient method is to have an initial consultation with your dentist and then start with a home whitening kit. The dentist will start by measuring you for a custom built tray which will hold the whitening gel – preventing any burning and providing you with a custom whitening treatment.</p> 

<p>The second procedure is laser whitening, this is a much stronger form of whitening. A dental professional will apply a gel to your teeth and then a laser will activate the whitening properties within the gel.</p> 

<p>If you are considering tooth whitening, it is important to consult a professional in the first instance to identify the type of whitening that will suit you and then weigh up the pros and cons of each approach.</p>

It is not enough to say that if you want to stay healthy all you need to do is get regular physical activity, get a good night sleep every day and eat the right foods. The most important thing you have to do to stay healthy is to balance all three of these things properly and make sure that you are doing things that benefit your whole body.</p>

<p>When you talk about following a healthy diet, you need to realize that different foods impact the body in different ways. Opticians will tell you that a proper diet will help your eyes in a wide variety of ways. The question that people will then ask about nutrition and eye health is what kind of foods they need to include. There are certain foods that will help maintain your eye health and that can help with certain conditions of the eye.</p>

<li>Vitamin A and Beta Carotene &#8211; It has been told to people that if they eat their carrots they will have better eyesight.  Kids are taught this lesson from an early age, but they rarely are taught what it is in carrots that actually help the eyes.  Carrots are a good source of beta carotene and vitamin A and this can help the eyes focus better in low light.  It can promote overall eye health as well.  Carrots are not the only foods that contain beta carotene and vitamin A. It is also found in sweet potatoes, spinach and milk.</li>

<li>Vitamin C – Most people think that taking vitamin C is used to help prevent colds, but it can also help your overall eye health. Vitamin C can boost the immune system. As people get older their immune system can start to suffer and vitamin C can help keep it stronger.  This will help prevent some of the age related diseases that are associated with the eyes as well. Citrus fruits are the most common source of vitamin C for most people, but it can also be found in broccoli and peppers</li>

<li>Vitamin E – Vitamin E will help with the age related diseases of the eyes along with vitamin C. It can help prevent cataracts and macular degeneration. Wheat germ, sunflower seeds, and nuts are excellent sources for vitamin E.</li>

<p>Vitamins are not the only things that people need to make sure they are getting to maintain eye health. Antioxidants are also a great way to keep your eyes healthy. Antioxidants can attack the free radicals that form in the body and that attack otherwise healthy cells. Free radicals are blamed on a wide variety of conditions from diseases of the eye to cancer to many other conditions in between.</p>

<p>The antioxidants that are effective are Lutien and zeaxanthin. They help protect the eyes from the devastating effects of ultraviolent light and other damaging effects of the environment that we live in. They are also helpful in dealing with many age related eye diseases. Antioxidants will not only help protect the eyes from being damaged, they can also help repair some of the damage that may have already occurred. The best way to get the antioxidants into your body is by including foods that are high in them in their diet. These include spinach, kale, corn, green beans and other green leafy vegetables.</p>
  
<p>There are other foods that can be included in your diet that will help your eye health. Avocados, eggs, and salmon have all been shown to have the vitamins, minerals and antioxidants that are needed for your eye health.  A good diet will find a balance of all of these foods that will allow your body to get everything it needs to stay healthy, but you should not overdo any one food.</p>

<p>Many people struggle to follow the diet they need to not only for their eye health but for their overall health. They will have a litany of excuses about why they are unable to do it. The most common reason is they do not have the time to prepare healthy meals or the food they need is not at hand. You can make all of the excuses that you want, but if you really want to do something about nutrition and eye health, you have to make a commitment to make the right choices for your body. You need to plan your trips to the store and buy the foods that will provide your eyes with what they really need. You have to find the time to make the food that contains the right ingredients.  This may not sound like fun, but it will help your eyes.</p>

<p>When your best efforts fail to get the food that you should into your body and to get enough of the vitamins that your eyes desire, it is possible to look for eye health supplements to make up for what your diet is lacking. When trying to find the right supplements, look at the foods that you should be eating to help your eye health. You need to get the same vitamins, nutrients and antioxidants that are in the foods listed above.
